CARE BUILT AROUND THE PERSON
What person-centred care really means
Person-centred care means seeing the person first and the task second. Instead of fitting people into routines that suit the service, it starts with who someone is — their history, their relationships, what they value and how they want to live — and shapes support around that. It treats people as equal partners in their own care, with the right to make choices, take positive risks and be treated with dignity, whatever their age, condition or ability. The same diagnosis can mean very different things to two different people, so person-centred care resists one-size-fits-all routines and asks, every time, what matters to this particular person today.
It sounds simple, but doing it well takes real skill: listening properly, noticing what matters to someone, involving families without taking over, and balancing choice with safety. Care Learning brings free training on all of this into one place. From dignity and advocacy to personalisation and care planning, every course is written in plain English and grounded in the values that sit behind good care. You can learn at your own pace, download a certificate to use towards your CPD, and bring more warmth and respect to the support you give — at no cost to you or your employer. Done consistently, this is what turns a service people simply use into support people genuinely trust, and it is a standard that regulators, families and the people you support all rightly expect. It is not an add-on to good care — it is what good care is.
THE PRINCIPLES
The values behind person-centred care
Six ideas that turn good intentions into genuinely person-centred support.
Dignity and respect
Treat every person with compassion and respect, protecting their dignity in even the smallest moments of care.
Choice and control
Support people to make their own decisions and stay in control of their care, their routines and their lives.
See the whole person
Understand someone’s history, culture, relationships and preferences — not just their needs or a diagnosis.
Involve family and others
Work in partnership with families, friends and other services so support is joined up around the person.
Support independence
Help people do as much as they can for themselves and build on their strengths, not only their needs.
Safe, positive risk
Respect people’s right to make choices and take positive risks, while keeping them safe and supported.
