Running an After-School Club Course Outline

Module 1: Understanding After-School Provision and Ofsted Requirements
Learners will explore what is meant by after-school clubs, wraparound childcare, childcare provision and activity-based provision. The module explains the main operational and communication responsibilities of managers and supervisors and examines the circumstances that can affect whether Ofsted registration is required. Learners will also consider the differences between school-operated provision and separate organisations using school premises, as well as how the Early Years Register and compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register can affect a setting’s responsibilities.

Module 2: Staffing, Suitability and Safe Deployment
Learners will examine how staffing arrangements should reflect children’s ages, attendance levels, activities, individual needs and the requirements applying to the provision. The module considers supervision expectations, including the requirement under the compulsory Childcare Register for sufficient staff to safeguard children’s welfare and at least one person for every 30 children. It also covers DBS eligibility, wider suitability checks, safer recruitment, induction, skills development and ongoing training. Learners will consider how managers can deploy staff effectively across different spaces and respond safely to absences, changing activities and additional support needs.

Module 3: Child-Led Play, Inclusion and the Adult Role
Learners will develop an understanding of child-led play and the Playwork Principles, including the importance of freely chosen, personally directed and internally motivated play. The module considers how clubs can provide a balanced programme combining active, creative, social and imaginative opportunities with quieter spaces and opportunities for rest. Learners will also explore age-appropriate and inclusive planning, communication, accessibility and reasonable adjustments, alongside the adult’s role in observing, supporting and intervening without unnecessarily taking control of children’s play.

Module 4: Preparing a Safe and Well-Organised Session
Learners will consider the checks that should take place before children arrive, including inspections of rooms, outdoor areas, entrances, exits, equipment and activity resources. The module explains how emergency contacts, health information, permissions, attendance information and other essential records should be kept accurate, accessible to authorised staff and handled confidentially. Learners will also examine first-aid arrangements, evacuation procedures, emergency communication, accident reporting and the need to remain alert to changing conditions and risks throughout a session.

Module 5: Arrivals, Attendance, Collection and Departure
Learners will explore how clear handover arrangements establish when responsibility for a child passes to the club and how expected attendance information can be used to identify children who have not arrived as planned. The module covers authorised collectors, changes to collection arrangements, late collection and the importance of verifying and recording departures consistently. Learners will also examine how accurate registers support everyday supervision and emergency procedures, together with the actions staff should take when a child is missing, unexpectedly absent or remains uncollected.

Module 6: Safeguarding in After-School Provision
Learners will examine common safeguarding concerns that may emerge through children’s behaviour, conversation, play, injuries, peer relationships, online experiences or adult conduct. The module explains how staff should respond calmly to disclosures, avoid investigating concerns themselves and make accurate factual records before reporting through the agreed safeguarding route. Learners will also consider safeguarding responsibilities when a club shares school premises, including provider status, named contacts and information sharing, as well as circumstances that may require referral or escalation to children’s social care, the local authority designated officer, emergency services or other appropriate safeguarding professionals.
